F4F Wildcat and F6F Hellcat Aces of VF-2
(Aircraft of the Aces)

By Thomas McKelvey Cleaver

The pilots of VF-2, flying Grumman F4F Wildcats, were able to rack up 17 claims at the Battle of the Coral Sea during the bitter 48-hour period of fighting. The squadron so impressed Cdr Edward "Butch" O'Hare, the Medal of Honor-winning first U.S. Navy ace of WWII, that he requested the squadron replace VF-6 in his Carrier Air Group 6 aboard the USS Enterprise. No other U.S. Navy unit created as many aces as VF-2, whose pilots went into action over the Carolines, Marianas, Guam, Iwo Jima and the Battle of the Philippines Sea. Using exquisite photographs and first-hand accounts from the elite fliers themselves, this volume tells the story of the ace pilots who comprised VF-2.

Abandoned at the Leyte:
The WWII Memories of Dr. Doy Duncan, Wildcat Pilot

By Doy Duncan

Doy Duncan was assigned to the USS Kadashan Bay, CVE-76, to fly the FM-2 Wildcat fighter plane. He saw his first combat in September 1944 as he flew support for the First Marine Division's invasion of the Palau Islands in the Pacific. He would be shot down a month later in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Abandoned at Leyte is Duncan's story of courage and survival as a World War II Wildcat pilot.
